Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Did I pack enough clothes? Do I have all my medication? Will I make it to the airport in time? Did I remember to unplug the coffee pot? Do I have all my children with me? Traveling can be stressful. You have a million things on your mind. Packing, flights, hotels, reservations, and having a good time. You're stressed, nervous, and excited all at once. You want your trip to go smoothly, with no issues. There's always a lot of anticipation leading up to the trip. Sometimes that anticipation can lead to the trip of a lifetime, while other times the trip is a total letdown.
Traveling with MS can tricky for some people. You worry about getting through the airport, flying, sitting in a car for long periods, how to store your medications safely, bathroom breaks, are you going to need a walking device, the heat, the cold, and everything else in between.
I've always joked with my mom about what she's like a person to travel with. Even without the MS, she can be a little panicky. We joke and call her Doctor Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. Before the trip she panics, she worries, and she goes over every detail a million times over. But as soon as she's inside the airport, its like a cloud lifts and she's as cool as a cucumber.
There are things you can do to help make the traveling process a little easier:
1. Plan, plan, plan. Research handicap accessible hotels, flights, restaurants, excursions, etc.
2. Take one thing at time. Don't stress over all the details. Check them off one by one.
3. Make a list, check it twice. Make a list of items and medications you need to bring.
4. Take breaks. Have a seat. Rest. Stretch your legs. Take potty and food breaks.
5. Don't over do it.
6. Bring a companion. Bring your spouse, a family member, a care partner or friend. Bring someone who you can trust in case you need a little extra help.
7. Stay hydrated!
8. Wear comfortable clothing.
9. Take lots of pictures! You want to see those memories forever!
10. Have fun!
What are tips for traveling? What are some of your favorite travel memories or worse nightmare stores?
